Latest acquisitions

Upstairs in the museum, our New Acquisitions case is a real cabinet of curiosities!  There's a Box Iron used locally until 1946; a Postcard from Base Camp, Mount Everest Expedition 1924; Account Books from the General Stores, Barkla Shop (1909-1920); a Mocha-ware jug; and the useful 'Resolute' Domestic Measure from Kemps Stores, which dates eggs from new to 3 months & over.

Granite quern or grinding stone
Granite mortar or grinding stone. Oval in shape with hollowed centre. Found about a foot below the surface of the ground in the Tywarnhale Mine area. Possibly Medieval/Post Medieval.

Coffee pot
Two of five pieces of pottery dug up in a garden in St Agnes. They appear to be part of a coffee set commissioned for Wheal Kitty Ltd. It is likely that the tableware was in use c1900.

Wheal Ellen by Ted Long
St Agnes Museum was delighted to be offered this watercolour of Wheal Ellen painted by Ted Long in 1971, by Professor Charles Thomas of The Royal Institution of Cornwall during last summer. Professor Thomas is a staunch supporter of the Museum and the watercolour is a valuable addition to our collection.

We are enormously grateful to Professor Thomas and also to John Branfield who generously undertook to have the painting sympathetically remounted and reframed.

Volunteer Aid Detachment nurse's cape
This Volunteer Aid Detachment nurse's cape is displayed in the museum alongside the the badges and medals below, which belonged to Nurse Elsie Millman of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve.

Two of the most interesting pieces are perhaps the Royal Red Cross which was awarded to Nurse Millman in 1917 and the medal from the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve.
